Common Problems and Fixes For Your Dishwasher

While dishwashers are obviously going to save you a lot of time in the kitchen, sometimes things aren't always going to work as expected. Call a dishwasher repair company to get things immediately fixed. If you are experiencing common dishwasher issues, read on to find the solutions. Here are some common problems and solutions that you may experience with your dishwasher over the years:

1. Dishes Still Wet

  • Load dishes correctly so that the water can run off freely.
  • Regularly add Finish® Jet Dry® to the rinse aid dispenser.
  • Increase the setting of rinse aid dosage, if necessary.
  • Possible faulty heating element.

2. Dishwasher Doesn’t Run

If you turn on the dishwasher and absolutely nothing happens, the problem is usually caused by an absence of power:   If the dishwasher’s cord is plugged into a receptacle, check to see if it is a GFCI receptacle with a reset button. If it is, push the reset. If it isn’t or if the dishwasher’s cord is wired directly into the electrical box, look for any other receptacles in the kitchen that have a reset and and try resetting them. (This is a long shot, but it’s easy to do and may solve the problem if the dishwasher is on the same circuit.) To test a receptacle for power, you can also just plug a working hand-held appliance into it.1Be sure the power is on, the door is latched, and the control is engaged. If absolutely nothing happens—in other words, nothing on the control panel lights up and there are no other signs of life—the appliance may not be receiving power.   Check the electrical panel that serves the dishwasher for a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. If you find one, switch the breaker to OFF and then back to ON or replace the fuse.   Check dishwasher switches & timer. If electrical power is available to the dishwasher but the appliance doesn’t run, the problem is likely a defective door switch, timer, or selector switch. To solve a door switch problem, you may be able to adjust the door latch’s strike slightly, using a screwdriver (turn off the power to the dishwasher at the electrical panel first). If the problem is with the timer or selector switch, it’s best to call an appliance service person.

3. Dishes Don't Come Clean

  • Mineral Deposits – In areas with hard water or well water, mineral deposits can build up over time leaving a film on the glassware. To fix this, utilize a water softener, such as Jet Dry. You can test for mineral deposits by soaking the glass in white vinegar for 5 minutes. Vinegar will remove the minerals, so if the cloudiness is removed, this may be your problem.
  • Clogged Drain – As dishwashers remove bits of food and other grime from the dishes, it drains the water through a screen. Over time, the gunk can build up, causing the dishwasher to cycle through dirty water. Check the filter and drain area to ensure there is no food or build-up left behind. Clean it out promptly if there is to ensure that the water being used on the dishes is clean and fresh.
  • Dishes Too Clean? – Dishwasher detergent requires some dirt and food to work correctly. If you are washing the dishes prior to placing them in the dishwasher, the detergent may have nothing to neutralize the acidity. This can lead to scratching the surface of the dishes, giving them a cloudy appearance.
